It’s time to get REAL

As of May 7, 2025, Michigan residents will need to present a REAL ID-compliant document to fly within the United States and enter certain federal facilities to comply with federal law.

Standard license or ID (both star versions are considered REAL ID)

Circle with star design: Standard REAL ID-compliant licenses and IDs will display a star in a gold circle in the upper right corner.

Michigan silhouette with star design: Standard REAL ID-compliant licenses and IDs will display a star in a silhouette of Michigan in the upper right corner.

To convert to a REAL ID driver’s license or state ID, visit a Secretary of State office and provide the following documents:

  • Your current Michigan driver’s license or ID
  • A name-change document, if your name is different from what is on your legal presence document
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or proof of legal presence

There’s no additional fee to turn a license or state ID card into a standard REAL ID if it’s done during your normal renewal time; otherwise a duplicate card fee of $9 or $10 will be charged.
